F18 sailors in Far North Queensland

 

We have a large group of F18 sailors in the Mission Beach area. This is a photo of the group a couple of weeks ago at the Nacra Nationals. The F18 sailors from around Australia are thinking of them and hope all their families are safe.

Gosford Nationals

We all had a fantastic time at the Gosford Nationals. The club and the volunteers did a great job and ran a very professional regatta. All the F18 sailors would like to thank James Ogilvie who put in so much effort to make the event so successful. Thanks to Kyle who sorted out finances and paperwork and to Grantly who got sponsors prizes from Zhik and Harken. We had 33 F18s and 12 F16s and the racing was awesome.

 

Next nationals

We held the AGM at the regatta and next seasons Nationals will be held as part of Magnetic Island Race Week from the 2 – 6 September 2011. Check out the regatta website for more info www.magneticislandraceweek.com.au Next season it is Queensland's turn to host the nations. We have a large fleet on F18s in Far North Queensland and they suggested that it would be good to be part of a big sailing event. This will help raise the profile of the class and should be a lot of fun. Normally the F18 nationals are held near the Australia Day but this time of year is not practical up north because of stingers and cyclones.

 

Oceanic F18s Championships

There is a proposal to hold an Oceanic F18 Championship in the Cook Islands in 2012. The Cook Island tourist bureau are keen to sponsor the event with shipping and cheaper accommodation. They even want to sponsor our local NSW travellers series. The Australian F18 association support the idea but are looking for an expression of interest from sailors before any planning takes place. Would you like to take your boat to the Cook Islands in 2012? I certainly would love to go. Pulbah Island Marathon

This Saturday 5th February is the Pulbah Island Marathon starting from Speers Point Sailing Club. The briefing is at 11.00hrs and La Mans start at 1200 noon. This a popular event and usually draws a large fleet of F18s. At Speers Point they now have 9 local F18s and with a group of us coming from Sydney we should have a fleet of over 15 boats. This will be part of the NSW Travellers series.

Sydney Flying Squadron

The Sydney Flying Squadron at Milsons Point have a new Commodore and he is very keen to get F18s visiting their club for regattas. The club is really hopping at the moment with live music after the racing each week, a spectator ferry and good prizes for the sailors. Next season they are offering a prize worth $5000 for a race on 24th September! No I didn't put too many 0s on that number that is five thousand dollars. A race for boats eighteen feet long with a 2.30 start 24th September to find the fast 18 foot boat in Australia. It will be a great competition with the skiffs verses the cats. A few of us will be visiting the club this season for a few races. We will keep you posted if you want to join us.

Oceania F18 Championships Cook Islands 2012

Oceania F18 Championships

Expression of interest for competitors


To all,

With the increased profile of catamaran sailing worldwide we have had a proposal from OSAF to develop a inaugural Oceania F18 Championship event in 2012. Discussions with organising committee's and sponsors have already begun and Atutaki, Cook Islands has been flagged for the events first location.

Racing will be planned over 5 days, maximum 16 races following the same format as the International F18 World titles. The Australian F18 association is fully backing the introduction of this event and working to ensure an Oceania event can get off the ground.

F18 Class Rule Changes

To all,

The international F18 Association had it's December meeting last weekend and some changes to the class rules have been agreed. These will be current from the 1st Jan 2011 so please take note

The Council approved unanimously to change the class rules as follow :

Standing Rigging change :

F.6.2 CONSTRUCTION

From 1st January 2011

(a) MANDATORY

(1) A forestay and bridles of 1 x19 stranded wire of minimum diameter of 4.0mm.

(2) Shrouds of 1 x 19 stranded wire of minimum diameter of 4.0mm.

(3) Trapeze wires of stranded wire or textile with a minimum diameter of 2.5mm.

(b) OPTIONAL

(1) A pair of diamond wires of 1 x 19 stranded wire of minimum diameter of 4.0mm.

The compliance date of 1st January 2011 would give any affected boats 12 months to comply.

The Council agreed to request TC to make for July 2011 meeting a proposal in order to limit the maximum dagger board projection under the hull.

10. Material used in F18 hull construction

The Council recall D.3.1 rule : The core cell material is not a class legal material.

A recorded letter requesting the details of boats already produced has been addressed to Loday/White on 7th of November with "No answer from the Company".

A second and last letter will be issued shortly requesting the details of boat produced and sold prior to 1 of August 2010 (list including owners name and hull number).

The boats produced and measured prior to 1st of August 2010 and listed on a class document will be allowed to continue to compete in F18.

All other boats using Core cell will not be class legal.

Kembla Klassic

Last weekend nine F18s joined the fleet of about 100 boats to compete in the Kembla Klassic. On Saturday a 10-15kts nor'easter made for a pleasant mornings race. Jason and Josh reveled in the light conditions and won the first race with the Brewins second. In the afternoon the breeze kicked into 25-30kts with some gusts reported at 38kts. Of the eight boats racing, six broke stuff and only three finished the race. Steve Brewin replaced his dad to crew for his brother Chris and the pair won the race. Capsizing and turtling seemed to be the order of the day for the rest of the fleet. Jason and Josh capsized three times and still finished 2nd. By the end of the afternoon many of the boats sported "chock tops". The wind increased and the third race was abandoned as all committee vessels had a busy afternoon rescuing broken boats.

To compete in a weekend regatta you need tactics both on and off the water. How you navigate around the bar can have a big impact on the next days performance and your position in the point score. With this in mind I brought in the "big guns" last weekend to crew for me. Legendary party animal Neil Moxham did his best to wipe out the opposition on Saturday night. Grantly was completely shattered Sunday morning and the young blokes Jason and Josh were more than a little dusty. Despite our best efforts to corrupt the lads they pulled it together to sail brilliantly and win both races with a convincing lead.

Party time

The Sydney Flying Squadron, Milson Point have invited the F18s and the A class cats to sail on the 18th Dec. The club has lost the 12foot skiffs and the new commodore Chris Haskard is keen to get the F18s and the As sailing occasionally at the SFS. On the 18th Dec we do not need to pay an entry fee and they will have a Christmas party after the race with seafood and a great band. The club also run a spectator ferry so it is a fun day for family and friends. Sydney harbour is a great place to sail and the parties at the Squaddie are legendary.
