Jason wins Speers Point Regatta

I have just had word from Speers Point representatives that Jason Waterhouse and Josh McKnight sailing a Hobie Wild Cat were the official winners of the Speers Point Regatta. Congratulations to the young guys.

Event 4 NSW F18 Travellers' Series

Hi all

Our fleet of 14 F18s joined the mixed fleet of dinghies and cats at the Speers Point Regatta last weekend. A big thank you to all the volunteers who made the event happen. The Waterhouses new Hobie Wild Cats drew a lot of attention from the crowd. Young Jason had a new crew 18 year old Josh McKnight who was sailing his first regatta in a catamaran. Rod sailed with wife Kerry on Saturday and his other mate Sunday. Grantly Pellew's stress levels were pretty high when he was still taking the bubble wrap off bits of the new boat at 11.00am. Katie sailed Saturday and Adam Beashel sailed Sunday. Glen Towndrow came to give his support but couldn't sail due to a busted shoulder. James turned up in the morning to wish us all well. He has just sold his black boat to Bruce Gunn from Speers Point.

Three back to back races were held each day in less than ideal weather. The wind on Saturday blew from every point of the compass from 2-15kts challenging even the most experienced of sailors. In one race we dropped our kites near the mark then hoisted them again for the "work". It created an almost impossible task for the volunteers who were running several races simultaneously for different fleets. On Sunday we woke to 15kt Southerly and hosing rain. After some initial problems with the start boat it was towed into position and the racing started a little late. The steady breeze made for good sailing and we had some good rides down wind.

There is some ongoing debate over the results. At the presentation the Brewins were awarded 1st place. They took their medal and envelope made a speech and thanked everybody. We all clapped and congratulated them and then headed home after proceedings had finished. Regrettably there had been a mistake in calculating the results and it seems that Jason Waterhouse actually won the regatta and the results were then changed. Richard Brewin is now challenging this outcome so at this stage the results are provisional.

Wild Cats Hit NSW F18 Fleet

3 new Hobie Wild Cats racing for the first time in Australia. Great to see new faces and some old ones sailing the new boats.

Wild Cats at Speers Point Regatta

 

 

Three new Hobie Wild Cats will race for the first time in Australia this weekend at Speers Point Regatta. The Waterhouse family who are based at Pittwater have acquired two of the new boats. Rod is a multiple Australian and World Master champion in the Hobie 16s and he will be skippering one of the cats. His teenage son Jason will be steering the other Wild Cat. Jason won several world and national youth events and just recently came second in the F16 Euro Challenge in Italy. Jason should be a great inspiration to the other teenagers that have started sailing in our F18 fleet. The Pellews will be racing the third Wild Cat and Grantly is still working on the boat this evening to have it ready for Saturday. Katie Pellew (ne Spithill) is currently ranked in the top 10 match racing skippers in the world and is on our Australian Olympic team preparing for London 2012. Katie will be steering on Saturday before flying out on Sunday to compete at an international regatta. Adam Beashel will be her replacement skipper on Sunday and Grantly will be crew both days. Adam has sailed in several Americas Cup challenges and has now lives on Lake Macquarie.

 

The Waterhouses and Pellews have made a massive effort to get the boats ready for the weekend and instead of just racing at their local club at Palm Beach they are making the extra effort to travel to Speers Point and join the rest of the F18 fleet.

 

It should be interesting racing in the next few months as the Hobies challenge the C2s. Currently the Brewin family with Chris and Richard and World and Australian Champion Steve are unbeatable. This season they have won every race of every regatta and have a perfect score in the NSW Travellers' Series. 

 

This weekend  8 visiting F18s will be joining the fleet of 7 local boats making a fleet of 15 F18s. The forecast is for a fresh Nor'easter on Saturday with a southerly change coming through late Saturday night and strong southerlies on Sunday. Fantastic conditions for exciting racing. Saturday night we plan to have dinner at the local pub next to the club. We are expecting about sailors to join the party.

Mission Beach Regatta Queensland

This weekend the Queensland F18s will again make the pilgrimage to north to sail in the Mission Beach Regatta and the Round Dunk Island Marathon. This event is run by the Tinaroo Sailing Club and a notice of race can be found on their website www.tinaroo.yacting.org.au/ This will also be the North Queensland Nacra Championships and a large number of boats are expected.

Oympics: F18 Class Official Submission to ISAF

--The Formula 18 Class Association Submission to ISAF on Olympic classes makes a strong statement: The IF18CA fully support the Multihull comeback but does not want to become an Olympic Class itself. Lots of debates on the class about this submission, but it was finally agreed a text that reflected the class position and discussions at Erquy , where last F18 Worlds were held in July 2010. Tornado class members were present at that meeting too.-
First mission is to have Multis back, then start to discuss which boat, in my personal opinion, the Tornado Class is in a good position for a comeback in 2016, but we need to start working for the future as soon as the Multis are selected again (hopefully)

Proposal
1. The International Formula 18 catamaran association (IF18CA) support the re-introduction of multihulls in the Olympic Games.
2. The IF18CA does not support selection of any current F18 design as Olympic Class.
3. The IF18CA support the selection of a 20 foot catamaran for men events and/or a 16 foot for women or mixed events.

Current Position
As the leading and fastest growing multihull Association, the IF18CA fully support the reintroduction of the multihull into the Olympic regatta. The Association believe that the multihull offers a distinct discipline, different from other monohull class and is worthy of inclusion to the Olympic regatta."

The IF18CA support the selection of a 20 foot catamaran for men and a 16 foot catamaran for women or mixed, both designs would be tailored for the medal race show and producing the best impact for the spectators and media.

Reason
A lot of harmony currently exists in the multihull scene. The selected design for the Olympics will represent the pinnacle of our sailing community, with top sailors sailing the best one design catamaran. They will be “our heroes on the top of the multihull pyramid"

The F18 fleet is a great class for thousands of club sailors and some professional sailors, mixing different kind of events such as long distance races or 'round the cans' races where various boat designs compete on elapsed time. The open design rule is strongly powered and is promoted commercially by many manufacturers on each continent which is developing the class. The F18 class is definitely the development class for builders and the “rendez vous point” for all kinds of sailors.

One of the major reasons unanimously shared by the class is that if one F18 design is selected as Olympic support, it will definitely give a technical and commercial advantage to the selected manufacturer and therefore threaten all other builders and sailors using other designs.
The F18 box rules allow any builder, even non professional builders, to enter the class on a fair basis. This is clearly expressed in the F18 class rules introduction guide line and principal.
The box measurement rule allows manufacturers to develop catamarans that are competitively priced yet allowing freedom to builders to develop higher levels of performance. Being open to any manufacturer allows many builders and sail makers to compete and so keep costs to a minimum.
